What Is Catch Basin Installation?

A catch basin or storm drain is a grate covered box available in a wide range of materials, sizes.

Ideal catch basin installation is generally done in low areas where the water collects the most. This prevents any drainage problems on your pavement (asphalt or concrete) surface. Water along with solid debris will then flow into the box, the larger solids and debris with settle in the bottom. When the water levels start to rise, the catch basin will reach the outlet trap and then flow into the local sewer drain system or watershed.

Steps for proper Catch Basin Installation

  1. First we determine the best locations for your catch basins.
    The lowest place where water collects is generally a wise spot for at least one catch basin. After choosing all of the locations for your catch basins, the best piping routes will be determined that will slope downward slightly.
  2. Next, our workers will begin digging trenches for the pipes.
    Depending on the size and scope of the projects this can be done with a trencher and a trenching shovel. We make sure to leave extra room in the trenches around the pipes so that we can ensure that the basin hole will line up with the outlet.
  3. As soon as the trenches have been dug, we begin to install the piping and basin.
    Before we place the basin in the hole we install the adapters or plugs that connect it to the pipes.
  4. There are multiple options for securing your catch basin: gravel and stone or concrete.
    Concrete offers the best protection from distortion, movement will generally extend the life of any catch basin. Concrete basins are usually more expensive and more difficult to work with when you do not have professional with the right equipment and techniques. Having a mold and being able to pour the mold before lowering the basin and then pouring the concrete around the basin will create better longevity.
  5. If using gravel or stone, we add a layer in the bottom of the hole, before placing the basin on the ground.
    We then attach a heavy grade or commercial grate.
  6. Once the basin installation has been completed, we connect the pipes to the basin’s inlet and outlet.
    If using PVC pipes they will be press fitted while corrugated pipes will snap and screw in. Completion of the piping network is secured with additional glue and tape where needed.
  7. Before backfilling begins you will need to test the system to ensure there are no leaks, holes or any other problems.
    Testing can easily be accomplished by pouring water directly into the basin or pipes.
  8. The last step for the storm drain is backfilling the trench and holes.
    The soil must be compacted perfectly because any voids will cause the system to sink, and result in drainage problems around your surface.
