What Is Asphalt Milling?

Asphalt milling usually occurs prior to installing a new asphalt layer or overlay and can be repeated on the same surface many times.

It is also sometimes called cold planning, cold milling or profiling. The milling process entails a milling machine breaking up, crushing, and removing an entire pavement layer/s ranging from just the surface to milling down to the base.

As the milling takes place, the removed material is simultaneously loaded into trucks for transporting and recycling to make products known as Recycled Concrete Aggregate (RCA) or Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP), which can then be reused for a future paving project. This results in a clean and quickly completed construction site. What is a Mill and Pave?

When an area is milled and repaved, it is also commonly called a Mill and Pave.

Often times the sub-base under the pavement has failed or the current pavement has become too deteriorated where it is best to mill and re-pave the area.

This involves milling up the existing deteriorated asphalt pavement and fixing any sub-base failures and problems by re-grading, leveling, pulverizing, and milling to a specific depth. The specific depth to mill asphalt would be determined once the type of traffic and volume has been identified for that particular area. After the milling takes place, the area is newly paved with a new asphalt surface layer or overlay completing the mill and pave process.
